College Admissions Consulting

The college admissions process in the US is complex to say the least. How does one determine “fit”? What makes a school “better” than another? How do we keep all of the deadlines and documents straight? And what about financial aid and scholarships? It’s an overwhelming process with high stakes.

School counselors do their best to support your student, but with the average high school counseling caseload in California at 464:1 as of 2022-23, the task of supporting a student’s college application journey can quickly start to feel impersonal and generalized (ASCA). That’s where support from an experienced professional can come in handy.

Many college consulting firms are faceless and focused on the bottom line. When you don’t know who you’re working with, it’s difficult to know if the support you are paying thousands of dollars for is truly worth your while.

As a former School Counselor, I’m able to provide you with the benefits of an insider looking at the big picture, while also being able to support your student’s individualized needs and understand the nuance of their interests.

During this time we will review:

  1. Your students career goals and your hopes for private support.
  2. Review your student’s current academic and extracurricular progress.
  3. Determine what on-going consulting options are available to best fit your needs and budget.

Your student MUST be present during this consultation.

Coaching & Consulting with School Counselors

School Counseling is one of the least understood professions in education, but one of the most needed. SCs tackle every issue you can imagine – none is too big or too small. Counselors support students with things as minute as friendships and as big as abuse. We support teachers with challenges from how to engage with a neurodivergent student to curriculum development for their next career exploration unit. We advocate with admin about grading disputes and advise on social climate dynamics leading to hate speech on campus. All while greeting every student with a smile on our faces and our full attention. And we’re supposed to come out of our Masters programs knowing how to do it all!

School Counseling preparation programs rarely prepare you for the reality of the job and early career coaching is almost never made available to us by our schools or districts. Most of your learning happens on the ground during your first 3 years, but without guidance many of us get trapped in a cycle of reactivity, and never have the opportunity to learn how to be strategic and proactive to actually get done all the things you wanted to get done when you started this journey.

That’s where individualized coaching and consulting comes in.

Individualized coaching ensures you get support that is relevant to your circumstances and that helps you grow into the badass School Counselor leader you want to be.

For those of us further along in our practice, strategic consulting can help us see beyond the biases we’ve developed and navigate around mountains without letting our emotions cloud our judgement.

This month, I’m launching a challenge.

Starting on Monday, February 16th through Tuesday, March 17th, I will be taking on any School Counselor who needs support navigating around the mountain that’s in the way of that thing you want to accomplish for your students and community.

Bring me a problem – it can be as small as one student and as big as the entire school. I’ll help you develop a strategy to start tackling that issue within 30 days of your session with me. The only thing I need in return from you is a review of your experience at the end of your 30 days. That’s it.

Let’s climb that mountain together.
